Independence Day and Rakshabandhan celebration at Central Prison of Shivamogga
Shivamogga, August 26, 2025;
In alignment with our commitment to fostering hope, compassion, and human connection within the incarcerated population, the Shimoga Diocesan Unit of Prison Ministry India orchestrated a special program to commemorate Independence Day and Rakshabandhan at the Central Prison, Shimoga, on August 25, 2025.
The program commenced at 12:00 noon with a prayer dance performance by the students of St. Charles Kannada Higher Primary School, New Town, Bhadravathi. Sr. Helen Moras, Coordinator for Prison Ministry India, Shimoga Diocesan Unit, extended a formal welcome to the dignitaries, staff, and inmates in attendance for this significant event.
The program was honored by the presence of Mrs. Preethi R, Assistant Superintendent of the Central Prison, along with Jailors Mr. S.S. Kattimani, Mrs. Sushma, Mr. Vijay Kumar, and Mr. Sharanabasappa, Mrs. Leela, the prison teacher, and also Mrs. Savitha, Mrs. Agnes, and Mrs. Mathamma, who are teachers from St. Charles Higher Primary School, Bhadravathi.
The highlight of the program was a series of cultural performances by forty-two enthusiastic schoolchildren, which brought smiles and cheer to all in attendance. Following this, Mrs. Preethi R. delivered a heartfelt and moving address to the inmates, filled with empathy and encouragement.
One of the most heartwarming moments of the event was the Rakhi-tying ceremony, where schoolchildren tied Rakhis to the inmates, representing brotherhood, care, and emotional solidarity. The atmosphere became quite emotional, as many inmates were visibly touched by this gesture of love and respect.
The commendable support provided by the prison administration, including the Assistant Superintendent, Jailors, and the inmates, greatly facilitated the smooth and peaceful execution of the program.
The Prison Ministry unit of the Diocese of Shimoga extends its profound appreciation to Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of Shimoga, for his generous sponsorship of the entire program. We also express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Ranganath, Superintendent of the Central Prison, Shimoga, for granting the required permissions.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Sr. Margaret D’Silva, Headmistress of St. Charles Kannada Higher Primary School, New Town, Bhadravathi, for her comprehensive arrangements facilitating student participation, and to Sr. Rossamma, Principal of Nirmala School of Nursing, for providing the school bus transportation.
We pray for continued divine blessings upon our endeavors to bring enlightenment and hope to the incarcerated.
